An IRD number is a unique number given to you by New Zealand's Inland Revenue Department. It is used by Inland Revenue, banks and financial institutions, government departments and employers to identify you for tax purposes.
You will need an IRD number if:
Children do not need an IRD number, unless they are earning income and will therefore need to pay tax. You can also apply for an IRD number for your child so a lower rate of withholding tax is deducted from interest earned on their bank balance.
