Future of Work

The Department of Labour’s Future of Work project is aimed at answering questions like "What might the quality of working life be in the future?" and "How will job opportunities change in New Zealand"?

The Future of Work project is a three- to five-year programme designed to give New Zealanders better information to plan for the future - whether you’re an employer, a worker or someone wanting to enter the workforce.

If there is a debate about New Zealanders’ working lives, the Future of Work project will help find the facts that so you can make informed decisions for yourself.

We will provide you with information to help answer such questions as:

  • As an employee, what skills will I need and what is the best way to acquire them?
  • Where are job opportunities growing and where are jobs disappearing?
  • As an employer, how can I meet my staff’s needs to balance their work and personal lives?  Are there good models to follow? Will it cost a lot?
  • As an employer, how can I respond to the increasing diversity in the workforce? How will migration affect the New Zealand workplace of the future?
  • Will technology put lots of New Zealanders out of work?
  • In the future, will fewer people work a traditional working week?
  • Will more people be self-employed?
  • Will most people work from home?
  • How can I help my kids plan for their working lives?
  • How can I plan better myself?

In some cases, the project will bring together existing information.  In other cases, the Future of Work project will be publishing analysis and research from the Department of Labour.
