Construction accidents in Wellington

Wednesday 15 August 2001

The Occupational Safety and Health Service (OSH) is urging the construction industry to make health and safety a number one priority after another accident in Wellington.

On Wednesday a Wellington street was pelted with concrete after an accident on a high-rise building construction site.

"It’s only luck that prevented anyone being seriously injured in this most recent accident," said Keith Stewart, Service Manager, Wellington, OSH.

"It is a reminder to construction companies working in a built up area that they need to be careful for both the safety of workers and that of the public, particularly with high-rise work.

"There have been other incidents recently of injuries on sites and material falling onto roads and footpaths that could have resulted in very serious injuries or deaths.

"Health and safety should be an integral part of any business and all players in the industry need to continue with recent improvements."
